Prince Harry Praised For Supporting An Injured Royal Marine

August 20, 2009

Britain's Prince Harry has been praised for "supporting" an injured Royal Marine. Serviceman Ben McBean - who lost his left arm and right leg, amongst other injuries, in a bomb blast in Afghanistan last year - was awarded £281,150 [$463,000] and a pension from the Ministry of Defense for the injuries he sustained.

But the 22-year-old - who has been named a "real hero" by the prince - has decided to appeal and has requested his claims, for various injuries, be heard together in a two-day hearing rather than individually.

He told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper: "Harry's supporting me, everyone is. He often writes me a note of support, he promised to buy me a pint and he bought me a whole crate of beer."

"I am just trying to fight for all of the other lads. We are not asking for loads of money, but we do need financial help."

When Marine McBean was injured in the blast last February, he was flown back to Britain on the same plane as the 24-year-old royal.

At the time, Harry said he was "humbled" by McBean's bravery.

The young serviceman's lawyer Mike Fordham said he was appealing against the compensation for head injuries and blast injuries, and will make a further claim for groin injuries and insomnia.
