Prince Harry Sparks Outrage After Video Of Him Using Racist Terms Leaked

January 12, 2009

Britain's Prince Harry has sparked outrage after video footage of him using racist terms was leaked. Muhammad Yaqoob Khan Abbasi - the father of the Sandhurst recruit the prince called "P**i" during a training exercise with the military academy - has condemned the prince, calling his actions "disgraceful."

Muhammad said: "When I saw the video I was very, very hurt. I strongly condemn the disgraceful fact that Prince Harry used that language against my son. That word he used is a hate word, and should never be used against any Pakistani."

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown called the 24-year-old royal's comments "unacceptable" but added he was sure Harry's subsequent apology was sincere.

He said: "I think Prince Harry knows these comments were unacceptable. I think the British people are good enough to give someone who has actually been a role model for young people and has done well fighting for our country, gone into very difficult situations with bravery, I think they will give him the benefit of the doubt."

Military sources claim the prince will face administrative action, probably involving an interview with his commanding officer. The Equality and Human Rights Commission has also demanded an inquiry.

But comments from readers of an article on the website of Britain's News of the World newspaper - which broke the story - suggest the public believe he was simply making ill-thought out jokes, rather than racist comments.

One said: "Prince Harry seems to me to be a regular fun loving young guy. The context that he made the comments were harmless enough he was speaking of his friend not a complete stranger, but someone he knew would see it as a laugh."

Another adds: "Harry's a top boy, lay off him. The bloke's royalty and could have lived behind his big gates and walls but he's got off his a**e and gone into the front line and in the firing line. He deserves credit not crucifying."
