Prince Williams Owes Navy Mates A Round Of Beers

June 3, 2008

Prince William owes his crewmates a round of beers. The Prince failed to "drop anchor" on the first try during a Navy exercise and tradition calls for him to buy the beers.

On his second day in the Royal Navy, the 25-year-old Prince was asked to release a cable attached to an anchor using a sledgehammer. He tapped the metal release mechanism once and nothing happened, but on his second attempt the 30 feet of cable and the anchor slipped into the River Dart.

"That's a crate of beer," William told reporters.

According to People.com, Petty Officer Wayne "Rats" Rattenbury said it was a Naval tradition for those who fail at the first go to buy their crewmates drinks. "It could have been worse - 16 blows is the worst ever," he said.

William didn't have any problems, however, when it came to maneuvering the wheel of a 14-meter-long Picket boat, which is a training craft.

Prince William's two months in the Navy is part of his preparation for becoming head of Britain's Armed Forces when he becomes King.
