Princes William And Harry's Cellphones Once Targeted, Hacked By Tabloid Reporter

September 3, 2009

Britain's Princes William and Harry's cellphones could have been hacked into, it has been alleged. Philip Williams, Chief Superintendent of the Metropolitan Police, believes there is evidence to suggest the phones may have been targeted by News of the World reporter Clive Goodman.

Goodman was jailed for four months in 2007 for planning to hack into royal aides' voicemails.

Williams told the Commons Culture Committee that police had "never been able to prove" their suspicions.

When asked if there was a solid basis for the suspicions, Williams said: "Yes. Their voicemails may well have been intercepted."

The officer was being questioned - along with Assistant Commissioner John Yates - about why the police didn't reopen their investigation after a several articles reignited interest in the case earlier this year.

Andy Coulson, former editor of the News of the World, was questioned in July by the Commons Culture Committee about hacking into the princes' phones.

Tom Crone, legal manager of News Group Newspapers - the News of the World's parent company - was also quizzed.

Suspicions were raised following an article which revealed a phone message left on Harry's phone by his brother William. During the call, William did an impression of Chelsy Davy, who was Harry's girlfriend at the time.

Both Coulson and Crone said they couldn't recall the story. The newspaper insists there is "no evidence" to back up these claims.
