Ricky Gervais "Hates Working Hard"

May 14, 2009

Ricky Gervais hates working hard. The British comedian - who shot to fame playing David Brent in hit UK TV show "The Office" - gets no pleasure from being a workaholic but likes to feel he has earned his money.

He said: "I hate working hard but I know that feeling of achievement is overwhelming. And pride. There's nothing wrong with winning the lottery but you can't be proud of it."

Gervais was brought up on an under-privileged estate in Reading, England, and is convinced it was his upbringing which taught him the importance of earning your own money.

He said in an interview with the Financial Times newspaper: "The way I was brought up there was nobility in poverty."

"You could do what you want at 5.30pm but you had to make your own money."

The actor admits he is a perfectionist and has to do everything himself.

He said: "Writing is the important thing. I direct to make sure someone else doesn't misunderstand it, I produce so I'm in charge, I'm in it so I can realize what is in my head."
