Ricky Gervais To Move Away From Comedy

October 2, 2009

Ricky Gervais is moving away from comedy. The 48-year-old British star is becoming increasingly interested in creating dramatic projects, and his next film will not rely on his comic talents.

Appearing at the gala screening of his new movie "The Invention of Lying" at London's BAFTA offices Thursday night, Ricky told BANG Showbiz: "It's all about the things that excite me most, and the things that really excite me and really make a difference in my life have been drama more than comedy."

"I love comedy, and it's what I do, but the things that really move me are more dramatic, and particularly as we go along, we've snuck in more drama."

"This film is a comedy which goes into philosophical questions and drama and my next project, 'Cemetery Junction' is the most dramatic thing we've ever done. I'd say it was a drama with funny bits."

While "The Invention of Lying" - which Ricky co-wrote, co-directed and stars in - starts as a comedy about a world where everyone tells the truth until one man discovers the ability to lie, the comedian promises it has a few twists.

He added: "It starts off as a high concept comedy then goes to a middle sort of bit and ends up as a sweet Hollywood rom-com."

"The Invention of Lying" opens in cinemas Friday.
