Steve Irwin's Dad Recalls How His Son Saved Him From Committing Suicide

April 8, 2008

Steve Irwin had saved his father's life from suicide, dad Bob has revealed. The late wildlife expert had told the elder Irwin he would also take his own life if his dad decided to do so.

In an interview in an Australian TV program, Bob, 68, has narrated how he had grieved over his wife Lynn when she died during a 2000 car accident. He was so miserable that he decided to drive his truck and head to the "special spot" that he'd shared with Lynn and Steve in the past, Australia's The Age newspaper reports.

His cell phone rang in the truck and it was Steve. Bob says, "He said, 'I know what you're going to do,' and I didn't really have an answer for that and then he said, 'Well, wait there, I'll come with you because we both might as well go.'"

"And I said, 'You can't do that' because he had [daughter] Bindi at that stage and he said, 'Well, if you're going to do it, then I'm coming.' I just felt at the time I just couldn't let him do it and he knew that."

The elder Irwin also says he and his famous son are connected by telepathy. "We were so close that we both knew what the other person was thinking a lot of the time and I just couldn't let him do it. So I had to come back in. That's probably one of the hardest thing I've ever done."

Steve had died on September 4, 2006 after a stingray fatally pierced him in the chest while filming a documentary.
