Sting Becomes Interested In Winemaking

March 12, 2009 Sting

Sting has a new career - as a winemaker. The 57-year-old Police frontman has already produced 30,000 bottles of organic red wine using grapes grown on his $8 million estate in Tuscany, Italy.

The first batch of his 2007 vintage - including a Chianti and a Tuscan red made from the Sangiovese grape - will go on sale in September.

Speaking at an Italian village meeting last night, Sting - real name is Gordon Sumner - said: "The wine has no name yet but we're working on it."

The musician bought the 16th century villa in Figline Valdarno, south of Florence, in 1997 and now lives there permanently.

He said: "I want to defend Tuscan agriculture and bio-diversity. Since January I have been round the world one and a half times. When I get back here, I take a deep breath and say to myself, 'I'm home.'"

Sting's estate manager Paolo Rossi said the vintage is "rock music wine" with "a bit of swing and a bit of international pop thanks to the addition of Cabernet and Merlot grapes".

Sting and his wife Trudie Style also produce and market organic honey and Italian olive oil, which is sold to London department store Harrods and online.

A percentage of all their profits go to the Soil Association, which promotes organic food and farming in Britain and the Rainforest Foundation, which they helped found in 1989.
