Take That's Gary Barlow Injures Back One Week Ahead Of Kilimanjaro Climb

February 23, 2009

Take That frontman Gary Barlow has injured his back during preparations to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for Comic Relief. The charity gig would see the singer climbing 19,000 feet with a number of other celebrities, including Cheryl Cole, Kimberley Walsh, Alesha Dixon, Chris Moyles and Fearne Cotton.

A statement on the band's website says "the muscles in Barlow's back have gone into spasm" due to a "hectic training schedule" adding that the singer has been "treated appropriately" and should be able to complete the charity climb.

The 38-year-old singer has been told to rest until he departs for Africa next week. The stars are hoping to raise cash for Comic Relief and have set their goal at Ł1 million ( approx $1.4 million), some of which will be used to combat malaria in Tanzania, where Mount Kilimanjaro is situated.

A spokesperson for Comic Relief has commented on Barlow's back problems, saying: "We are fortunate to have the support of eminent sport professionals on the climb. Gary is lucky they found the injury in early stages," Angry Ape reports.
