"The Mary Tyler Moore Show" Season Five is currently available on DVD. Released on Oct. 6 through Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, the latest season of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" contains 24 episodes, including "Not Just Another Pretty Face," "A Son for Murray" and "Ted Baxter's Famous Broadcaster's School." All episodes are remastered in full screen 1:33 aspect ratio. Following her stint as Laura Petrie on "The Dick Van Dyke Show," Mary Tyler Moore stars as Minneapolis television news associate producer Mary Richards, a single woman searching for love while juggling a career at WJM-TV and numerous friendships. "Up" voice actor Ed Asner portrays her boss, Lou Grant, a hard-boiled TV news veteran whose gruff exterior counterbalances Mary's spunky personality. Also in the newsroom are writer Murray Slaughter (Gavin McLeod), snarky on-air talent "Happy Homemaker" Sue Ann Nivens (Betty White) and dimwitted anchorman Ted Baxter (Ted Knight). At home, Mary has best friend Rhoda (Valerie Harper) and landlady Phyllis (Cloris Leachman). During its run from 1970 to 1977, the show won a multitude of awards, including 29 Emmys and three Golden Globes. The fifth season is no exception, including wins for actors Asner (Best Continuing Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series), White and Leachman (Supporting Actress), single episodes (Best Editing for "An Affair to Forget," Best Writing for a Comedy Series for "Will Mary Richards Go to Jail?") and the show itself, which took home an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series for 1975. The show won the same award for the following two seasons, as well. Even after the series' initial run, it has continued to win awards, such as the Groundbreaking Show award at the 2004 TV Land Awards and three posthumous Broadcaster of the Year for actor Ted Knight. Featuring 581 minutes of content, English and Spanish subtitles and Closed Captioning, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" Season Five retails for $29.98. |
