'90s sitcom star Mayim Bialik has been upped from recurring guest star to series regular on the CBS hit comedy series "The Big Bang Theory." The 34-year-old actress' promotion improves the balance of the girls and boys cast ratio on the show.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Bialik's contract is for the current season only. She's also not expected to appear in all episodes produced, unlike the show's main stars - Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, and Kunal Nayyar.

Bialik, who has a doctorate degree in neuroscience from UCLA in real life, plays Amy Farrah Fowler, Sheldon's (Parsons) genius quasi-girlfriend.

The news follows last month's promotion of co-star Melissa Rauch to series regular as well.
