NBC Launching A Capella Singing Contest

March 20, 2009 08:50 am CDT

NBC will be launching a new reality competition show similar to "American Idol." The new "The Sing-Off" will have contestants compete in a singing match.

But unlike the hit Fox show, the upcoming show will feature vocal-only groups. There would be "no lip-synching, no backup bands, no net."

Executive VP alternative at NBC and Universal Media Studios, Paul Telegdy, tells the Hollywood Reporter, "This is a fantastic feel-good series that viewers of all ages can enjoy. To hear these singing groups re-create a popular song with only the sounds of their voices is truly amazing."

The network didn't specify a premiere date for the show, but sources confide it's unlikely to be launched in summer.

Joel Gallen, executive producer of MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew" will be producing along with Deb Newmyer and Sam Weisman from Outlaw and Sony Pictures Television.
