Steve Carell is tendering his resignation from "The Office." The comedian, who plays Michael Scott in the Emmy Award-winning series, has confirmed he will be leaving the sitcom next season.

Carell, 47, first played the role in 2005 when the show premiered on NBC.

He confirmed to Usmagazine.com that the next season will be his last, saying, "It's the last on my contract, and I want to honor my contract."

"I am excited - just so I can spend more time with my family."

"The Office" is the U.S. adaptation of the British original, where Ricky Gervais plays the central character of the series.

It is expected that the peacock network will continue the show without Carell.
