The heads of a major television studio don't have to have ESP to know that their latest purchase will be a success.

Cable network TNT has picked up exclusive syndication rights to CBS's supernatural crime drama "The Mentalist." The rights to the show, previously held by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, will take effect in 2012.

In a press release from TNT, executives said they were excited for the business deal.

"'The Mentalist' is a terrific show that will be an ideal fit for TNT's already strong lineup," said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks. "The early success of the series also indicates 'The Mentalist' has a great future."

The show's wide array of critical and commercial praise includes a top rating for its debut 2008-2009 season and a Favorite New Drama trophy from the People's Choice Awards.

"Everyone recognized early on that 'The Mentalist' was an A-tier drama, the kind of program that would have a profoundly positive effect on its cable licensee," said Ken Werner, president of Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.

"The Mentalist," the demand for which Werner said has "steadily increased as the show blossomed into a true broadcast hit," has received accolades from TV critics from USA Today and Entertainment Weekly, as well as the Washington Post, referring to star Simon Baker's acting as "such a sly and commanding presence that he steals your attention in every scene." The show was also nominated for Outstanding New Program of the Year by the Television Critics Association.

The show focuses on Patrick Jane (Baker), a cocky consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation. Though exposed as a fraud during his past as a psychic celebrity, Jane's inherent eye for details in crime scenes make him an invaluable part of the Bureau's work. The series also stars Robin Tunney, Tim Kang, Owain Yeoman and Amanda Righetti.

"The Mentalist" is currently in its second season on CBS.
