Zara Phillips Let Her Dogs Run Free At Burghley Horse Trials Despite Ban

September 4, 2009

Britain's Zara Phillips defied a ban to let her dogs run free at the Burghley Horse Trials. The 28-year-old horsewoman - the daughter of Princess Anne - angered onlookers when she flouted strict regulations forbidding pets from being let off their leads when she let her pooches Spey and Corley play on the course at Burghley House, Lincolnshire, England.

A spectator at the four-day event - which Zara is competing in - told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper: "She totally ignored the rules and let both her dogs off their leads."

"The dogs were running around all over the cross-country course. You'd have thought she would be more careful after the trouble her mum's dogs have got into."

Zara's mother has got into trouble several times because of her animals. In 1993, one of Anne's dogs tried to attack a spectator at Gatcombe Park. Nine years later, the princess was fined £500 [$800] by magistrates under the Dangerous Dogs Act after her bull terrier Dotty attacked two boys, aged seven and 12, in Windsor Great Park.

The following year, another of Anne's dogs, Florence, bit a maid and later mauled one of Queen Elizabeth's beloved Corgis, which had to be put down.

Zara was forced to miss last year's Burghley Horse Trials after her horse fell at the first fence.
