"Battle for Terra" DVD Offers Exuberant Animation
Tue, 13 Oct 2009
"Battle for Terra" is currently available on DVD and Blu-ray from Roadside Attractions. Based on director Aristomenis Tsirbas's 2003 short film "Terra," the film takes place on the distant planet Terra, a world which the people of Earth have decided to colonize once their own planet becomes uninhabitable. A young Earth pilot (voice of Luke Wilson) lands on Terra to learn that it already has a populace, and they are not interested in giving up their world without a fight. He teams up with native girl Mala (Evan Rachel Wood) to prevent Earth from taking over and ultimately destroying the new paradise he has found. Besides Wilson and Wood, the all-star cast includes Chris Evans, Danny Glover, Dennis Quaid, Brian Cox, Justin Long, James Garner, Amanda Peet, Rosana Arquette, Mark Hamill, Beverly D'Angelo and David Cross. Since debuting in 2007 at the Toronto Film Festival, the animated science fiction family adventure has garnered praise from many outlets, including the San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today and the Chicago Sun-Times' own Roger Ebert, who referred to the film as "bewitchingly animated, nicely stylized." The movie has won numerous awards, such as the Grand Prize for Best Animated Feature at the Ottawa International Animation Festival, the Silver Gryphone for First Feature Competition at the Giffoni Film Festival and the Crystal Heart Award at the Heartland Film Festival. The DVD's special features include deleted scenes, audio commentary by Tsirbas, the original short film, a "Making Of" featurette and more. The DVD retails for .98, while the Blu-ray is available, complete with a holo-foil wrapper, for .99.
