"High School Musical 3" Scores Biggest Musical Opening Ever

Anthony Jones - Celebrity News Service Contributor Miami, FL (CNS) -- "High School Musical 3" and "Saw V" both opened to big box office this weekend, but the singing, dancing teens made the bigger killing. Disney's "High School Musical 3" earned an estimated million from Friday to Sunday. The sequel to the successful Disney Channel movies was the first to be released in theaters and easily broke the previous record for biggest opening weekend for a musical, this summer's "Mamma Mia" which earned .8 million in its July opening weekend. The G-rated musical about New Mexico high school students preparing for the final stage performance of their senior year was popular with pre-teens and their audience, while the horror "Saw"-ga continues to have no problem finding its pre-Halloween audience. "Saw V" scared up an estimated .5 million. Though it's the first "Saw" film not to hit #1 since the original "Saw" debuted at #3, it is the forth consecutive "Saw" film in a row to earn over million in its opening weekend. A sixth installment in the series is already in development. The weekend's other new wide release, the corrupt cop drama "Pride & Glory" pulled in .3 million to come in at #5. Clint Eastwood's latest directorial effort, "Changeling" with Angelina Jolie, opened at #20 after opening in select theaters. The story of a woman who's son goes missing earned 0,000 thousand in only 15 theaters, with an impressive per-screen average of ,441 per cinema. Last week's #1, the Mark Wahlberg actioner "Max Payne" brought in .6 million and moves into the #3 position. "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" earned .9 million, bringing it's 4-week total to million. The box office was up an impressive 41% from the same period last year, when "Saw IV" topped the box-office. Final figures are due Monday. The Top 10 Weekend Box Office For October 24th-26th: 1.
