"Mamma Mia!" Becomes The Most Successful Film In The U.K.

"Mamma Mia!" has become the most successful British film of all time at the U.K. box office.

The film, based on the 1975 ABBA hit song and on the musical stage play, garnered around 0 million, making it the highest grossing film of all time in the U.K. second to Titanic, contactmusic.com reports.

The 2008 film, starring Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan, has overtaken "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" for the spot after 16 weeks in the box office.

Universal Pictures International president David Kosse tells the website, "For Mamma Mia! to become the top grossing British film at the U.K. box office is fantastic."

"The quality of the filmmaking and resonance of this feel-good story have made Mamma Mia! the movie, like the stage play, truly a global phenomenon."

"Since its release in July we've seen people around the world coming back to see the film again and again."

"Mamma Mia!" has also become the number one film of the year in 13 other countries including Austria, Germany, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, and Spain.
