"Mamma Mia!" Helps U.K. Cinema Attract 12M Film-Goers
Tue, 30 Sep 2008

Thanks to ABBA, U.K. cinema has attracted 12 million audiences in the summer, the best attendance in recent years. "Mamma Mia!" has grossed approximately 1 million since its release in July.

As per the Film Distributors' Association (FDA), the cinema visits made in the last three months have increased to 53 million, three million up from 2007.

Although it looks like the Meryl Streep-headlined musical film has dominated the ratings, the summer box office wouldn't be as impressive as it is without the film's competitions.

FDA chief executive Mark Batey told BBC, "Numbers that big cannot come from just one or two films."

"There are still a vast number of other titles firing away to make up the 53 million visits."

He also mentioned that one factor that may have contributed to the success of the summer box office is the dwindling economy.

He added, "Cinema has proven itself to be remarkably resilient in times of downturn."

"It is a form of escape for everyone, is reasonably priced and can be universally enjoyed."

"Mamma Mia!" also starred Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard.
