"The Dark Knight" And "Wall-E" Voted The Best Movies Of 2008
Fri, 26 Dec 2008
You won't find "Slumdog Millionaire" on this list. In fact, the people who voted for this probably don't know what a "Slumdog Millionaire" is. This list was voted by readers like you who were asked to pick their Top Movies of 2008. You'll see Top 10 list mainstays like "Wall-E", but also some surprises like the Anna Faris pink hot pants vehicle "The House Bunny." The first three reader's picks can all be found on the American Film Institute Top 10 list, but it's the rest of the list that looks like it could be some critics' worst list. These are the Top 10 Movies of 2008 as voted on by AHN readers. 1. The Dark Knight Batman returned along with the Joker and Two-Face for a film that's been regarded as one of the best films of the year, one of the highest-grossing films of all time, and is considered the best superhero movie ever made. Christopher Nolan creates a masterful work of action and suspense, while Heath Ledger steals the entire show...and then blows it up. 2. Wall-E Pixar's story of a lonely robot on Earth might also be one of the best romance movies of the year, one of the best adventures of the year, and one of the best comedies of the year: all wrapped in a nice Disney toy-moving package. 3. Iron Man If it weren't for The Dark Knight, Iron Man would be considered the superhero movie of the past few years. Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark powers the lift-off to instantly dynamic levels, and his chemistry with Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts was some of the best we saw this year. Smart, witty, and thrilling, Iron Man soared to the levels of the Batman, Spider-Man and Superman franchises in just one film. 4. The House Bunny Anna Faris plays the dim-witted but sweet-natured Playboy bunny who moves out of the mansion and into the role of sorority housemother for a group of misfits. It's really a showcase for Faris' comedic talents, but readers couldn't resist The House Bunny's dumb charm. 5. Twilight Some shoddy special effects aside, Catherine Hardwicke's adaptation of the first book in the "Twilight" saga is successful at creating a teen romance you can really sink your teeth into. 6. Sex & The City: The Movie The movie, now in an Extended Edition on DVD and Blu-Ray, is longer than most discs in the Sex & The City season sets. Fans of the show came out in full force to see the fabulous foursome on the big screen, and wouldn't mind another chance to get Carried away. 7. Mamma Mia Who knew ABBA tunes and Meryl Streep were a combination worth over 0 million in worldwide box-office? The hit Broadway musical became a box office smash, showing that, with the 1-2 punch of "Sex & The City" and "Mamma Mia", summer blockbusters don't always have to come from comic books. 8. Wanted Angelina Jolie as an assassin? We're there. But James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman add some killer performances to this hyper-stylized action thriller that's relentlessly entertaining. 9. Cloverfield Swap the nachos for an aspirin. This experiment in monster movie-making is "Godzilla" meets "The Blair Witch Project", and our readers embraced this ambitious take on a creature in Manhattan. 10. High School Musical 3 The first big-screen installment of the Disney behemoth shows the original cast graduating their senior year and from the "High School Musical" franchise. It retained the same flavor of its predecessors but on a much bigger stage, which fills out nicely with the biggest dance numbers the tween trilogy has seen. Honorable Mentions: Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Changeling, Kung Fu Panda
