Australians' Lukewarm Response To "Australia"
Wed, 03 Dec 2008
Australian actors Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman's film hadn't been received as strongly as expected in their home country. "Australia" might bear the country's name but it didn't exactly excite the citizens despite heavy promotional events. It garnered .9 million in its five-day opening weekend. While the numbers were strong, it wasn't as high as expected, considering the Baz Luhrmann film centered on the whole nation. Studio bosses are now hoping it would withstand the real test of selling tickets in its second week. Nevertheless, it's Luhrmann's biggest opening ever in Down Under. It has surpassed "Moulin Rouge" by 200% in tickets sold and "Romeo and Juliet" by 337%.
