Canadian Singer to Star in an Upcoming Biopic of Aaliyah
Wed, 24 Dec 2008
BET reports that Canadian R&B singer Keisha Chante has reportedly been selected to play Aaliyah, the rising queen of R&B/Hip Hop who died in a tragic 2001 plane crash at the age of 22. The biopic will chronicle Aaliyah's life from her childhood to her career success to her tragic death from a charter plane crash in August 2001. Aaliyah had several successes in her music career, even though she was so young, including creating hit singles such as "Miss You" and "I Care 4 U." She also had 10 Top 25 hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100 including the worldwide No. 1 hit "Try Again," which became the first song in history to top the Billboard Hot 100 based only on airplay. The Brooklyn, New York-born singer started her recording career in 1994 with Age Ain't Nothing But a Number, which turned platinum when she was 15. It was produced by her then-husband, R. Kelly. Two years later she released One in a Million, which featured production by Jermaine Dupri and Timbaland. That album reached double platinum status in five years. The singer also starred in two motion pictures, "Romeo Must Die" and "Queen of the Damned" before her death. Aaliyah has even been the topic of four books published after her untimely death: Aaliyah: More than a Woman (2001) by Christopher John Farley, Aaliyah: An R&B Princess in Words and Pictures (2002) by Kelly Kenyatta, Aaliyah by Tim Footman (2003), and Aaliyah Remembered: Her Life & The Person behind the Mystique (2005) by William Sutherland. No word yet on when filming will begin.
