Critics Roast Tom Cruise's Performance In "Valkyrie"
Tue, 23 Dec 2008

Tom Cruise just can't win. He has humbled himself on TV and vowed not to speak about his religion publicly anymore, and yet, critics still can't love him in his new film "Valkyrie."

The 46-year-old actor has amassed scathing comments from film critics after they have watched his historical thriller pic.

MSNBC film critic Alonso Duralde wrote, "...There's a gaping hole at the center of Valkyrie, and his name is Tom Cruise."

"The actor appears lost without being able to launch his usual charm offensive, and whatever dark sides that Oliver Stone was once able to plumb from this performer seems nonexistent."

Associated Press film reviewer Christy Lemire boldly called Cruise the "weakest link" in the film, adding that he was "distractingly bad."

German papers also roasted the actor. Bild am Sonntag newspaper called Cruise's acting performance in the role of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg "as deep as a bowl of cornflakes."

But for the film's producer/director Bryan Singer, he has no regrets about casting the actor.

He told NY Post, "It was a thrill having him in the movie. It could widen the audience for this story that very few people know about. I always saw it as a benefit."

"Valkyrie" is set to be released on Christmas Day.
