Exclusive Interview: Actors From "I Do & I Don't" Have Lots Of Laughs During Filmmaking
Tue, 11 Nov 2008
The actors from the new comedy "I Do & I Don't" had a great time making their new film and Celebrity News Service got a chance to sit down with the stars at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival to get details about life on the set. The comedy stars Jane Lynch ("40 Year Old Virgin," "Role Models"), Matt Servito ("The Sopranos," "Brotherhood"), Bryan Callen ("Mad TV," "Entourage") and Alexie Gilmore ("Surfer, Dude," "New Amsterdam"). Lynch and Servito play the married, dysfunctional couple Nora and Dick Stelmack of 17 years. Cheryl and Bob, played by Gilmore and Callen, must endure pre-marital counseling and when assigned to hang out with the Stelmacks, the couple must learn on their own what it means to truly be happy. Matt Servito relished the chance to change things up and star in a comedy. His loved the way his character came about, telling CNS, "What's great about the character is we developed the character as we went along. We were able to improv a lot, go off script, let a moment last a little longer to see what would happen and so often we would just strike gold. The film really benefitted from this." Jane Lynch discussed her role saying, "Matt and my character counsel this sweet young couple, Cheryl and Bob, and they are basically sentenced to 3-4 weekends with us. I'm drunk, inappropriate and I come on to Bob." She laughs saying, "Matt's character takes his clothes off at the drop of a hat and he's a nudist. We basically get this young couple to unlock all of their secrets because of course, we want to know what they are. We want to know how they have sex, how often they have sex because we aren't having it anymore." Lynch got to know her co-stars well and enjoyed the making of the film. Lynch continues, "We had a really good time on this film, we laughed a lot, it was a happy accident in terms of our chemistry and we've become very good friends. I have such great memories of shooting in Baltimore and shooting this movie." "We lost about 2 days of worth of film because it was put through an x-ray machine for some reason and that was probably the worst day of filming for me. We had to re-shoot all of that stuff and it turned out even funnier. It was another happy accident." Gilmore, who plays the soon-to-be wife Cheryl, told CNS, "I was laughing the whole time. It's one of the best times I've ever had on a set. Everyone was so funny, Bryan, Matt and Jane and I think the hardest part about my job was keeping a straight face. There was so much hilarity happening around me. We just had the greatest time and became such good friends. We all really genuinely like each other." When CNS asked Callen what the hardest scene was for him to film, the actor and comedian answered, "The laughing scenes for sure. I am a bad actor and I want you to quote me on that. And when I tried to cry, it became funnier than ever. It is a classic example of bad acting-- but a great time." Callen also enjoyed working with his co-stars saying, "Jane is a legend in her own right and Alexie, who I think is such a good actress, subtle, beautiful and just a funny comic. I'm around comics all of the time and Alexie is one of the funniest people I've ever been around in my whole life. I'd put her against the best comic." The movie made it premiere at the film festival and also garnered Lynch the Best Actress in a Comedy for the festival. The film is currently unrated and should hit theaters sometime next year.
