FLIFF Brings Director Peter Rosen To Cinema Paradiso To Host Garrison Keillor Documentary
Thu, 29 Jan 2009

When Peter Rosen was a young child and working with his photographer aunt, little did he know how far his love of photography would take him. While he loved still photography, he quickly made the transition to film. Eventually Rosen made films for Yale's drama department and he was hooked.

Rosen has poured over 100 hours and one year into producing his latest project, "Garrison Keillor: The Man on the Radio in the Red Shoes." This documentary goes behind the scenes of America's most popular radio show, "A Prairie Home Companion," and looks at the private man in the very public spotlight.

Celebrity News Service sat down with Rosen and asked him about the experience. We asked Peter about his decision to take on this project and why he chose to make this documentary. "I made a documentary for Carnegie Hall in 1990 and met Keillor then. I thought he was a good subject," said Rosen.

While Keillor is a very private man, he allowed Rosen and his crew to follow him for one year, shooting over 100 hours of footage for the documentary. "We filmed one day per month for one year," said Rosen. CNS asked Rosen how he broke through the private, intimate parts of Keillor's life to create this project. "My crew and I were not really something that he had to deal with. We didn't ask him to do anything he wasn't normally doing throughout his day," said Rosen.

Rosen has worked with some of the most important figures in the arts such as Leonard Bernstein, Yo-Yo Ma, Stephen Sondheim, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Martha Graham. He adds Garrison Keillor to this group of important figures.

CNS asked about the future of documentaries to which Rosen answered, "Small theaters and art houses play a big role in the success of these documentaries. Documentaries are finding a home in the small theaters and art houses and they can have a healthy life if they remain in those venues."

Peter Rosen is not a big fan of a scripted documentary. He prefers to capture his footage randomly and has done an excellent job of producing a mosaic of the man and the radio show that is "Garrison Keillor: The Man on the Radio in the Red Shoes." He tells students that they can tell the story without a lot of interviews but they should use the cinema to tell the story.

CNS asked Rosen what he would advice he would give to film students. Tongue-in-cheek he answered, "Find another profession. The average person may not have the financial backing to get started."

"Garrison Keillor: The Man on the Radio in the Red Shoes" is playing at Cinema Paradiso through Sunday, February 1.
