India's High Court Reserves Order On Hari Puttar Case
Tue, 09 Sep 2008
Delhi High Court has reserved its order on Warner Bros' plea seeking to restrain the release of a Bollywood film for having a similar title to their franchise "Harry Potter." The creators of the film "Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors" have been sued by the Hollywood film production house for apparently having a similar title to their films based on author J.K. Rowling's novels. Warner Bros sought the court's intervention to prevent the producers of the film from being released under its current title. Senior advocate Sudhir Chandra, counsel for Warner Bros, said the film's producers deliberately chose the tile "Hari Puttar" to create confusion among viewers; thus, allowing them to gain big commercial advantage. But according to Mirchi Movies Limited, the Bollywood film's producer, their title is not similar to the box office hit film because "Hari Puttar" is based on an original literary work having no resemblance to "Harry Potter." Moreover, their title means "God's son" in Hindi and Punjabi. Warner Bros rejected their suggestion that they would continue with their present title with a disclaimer that it has no connection with the boy wizard. "Hari Puttar" is scheduled for a global release on September 12.
