Keanu Reeves is taking an intergalactic mission again. "The Day the Earth Stood Still" star has signed on to the 20th Century Fox' live-action film version of the Japanese anime series "Cowboy Bebop."

Set in the year 2071, the late 1990s series focuses on a group of bounty hunters traveling on their spaceship, the Bebop. Reeves, 44, would play Spike Siegel, one of the bounty hunters and copilot of the Bebop.

No word yet on who would play Jet Black, Spike's copilot.

Sunrise Inc., producer of the anime series, will be involved with the project. Kenji Uchida and Shinichiro Watanabe will be the associate producers along with Keiko Nobumoto, Variety reports.

Peter Craig is penning the script. Reeves' manager, Erwin Stoff, is producing through his 3 Arts company. Joshua Long will executive produce.
