Paul Newman has died. The Hollywood legend passed away at his farmhouse, located near Westport, Connecticut, on Friday after losing his battle with cancer. In a statement, his spokesman Jeff Sanderson revealed Newman, who was 83, had been surrounded by friends and family, including his wife of 50 years Joanne Woodward and five daughters, at the time of his death. Movie star Samuel L. Jackson will be honored with the 23rd American Cinematheque Award for his "significant contribution to the art of the motion picture" on December 1. The American Cinematheque board will honor the "Soul Men" star with the prestigious award for his "obvious talent and commitment" he brings to his characters. The board has honored Julia Robert and Al Pacino in the past. The non-profit organization's chair, Rick Nicita, has been quoted by BBC as saying, "Samuel L Jackson is a professional's movie star." Rachel McAdams is to star in "Sherlock Holmes." The "Mean Girls" actress is set to play Irene Adler, the love interest of the fictional titular detective of the film's name, who will be portrayed by "Iron Man" star Robert Downey Jr. "Alfie" actor Jude Law is also appearing in the Guy Ritchie movie as Holmes' sidekick Doctor Watson. It is also being reported plans for a sequel to the film - which is set to start shooting next month - are already underway. Rachel's character appears in just one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories about the detective, "A Scandal in Bohemia." There is no physical contact between the pair in the story, but it states that Holmes is impressed by her intelligence. Sep 25 08
"Die Hard" star Bruce Willis will be expanding his career by making his directorial debut in the independent film "Three Stories About Joan." The actor recently launched his own production company called Willis Brothers Films with Stephen Eads and his brother, David Willis. Moshe Diamant, who produced "The Black Dahlia," and Mark Damon, who produced "Monster," will partner with the company to produce the film. The film is about a young woman who is faced with tragedies at three different times in her life and the tragedies that cause her to lose her grip on reality. "10,000 BC" star Camilla Belle has been tapped to play the character. Kieran Culkin has also been cast for the film. Sep 25 08
The Will Smith-starrer "I Am Legend" will be having a prequel, Warner Bros. has revealed its plans, including the A-list star reprising his role as scientist Robert Neville. Director Francis Lawrence will also be returning to helm the sci-fi thriller film, while D.B. Weiss will pen the script. The prequel will center on the final days of humanity in New York before the man-made virus plagued the planet and left Smith's character the lone survivor in the city. Sep 25 08
Mafia drama "The Godfather" is the greatest movie of all time, according to over 10,000 moviegoers, filmmakers, and critics surveyed by Empire magazine. Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 family crime film beats out other silver screen legends including Indiana Jones movie "Raiders of the Lost Ark," which came in second, and Star Wars film "The Empire Strikes Back," which came in third. Johnny Depp will star in a fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. The actor - who won fans worldwide with his performance as the drunk, bearded pirate in the Disney film franchise - will reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook confirmed Wednesday. However, Johnny is unlikely to be joined by his former co-star Keira Knightley - who played Elizabeth Swann in the first three films. When recently asked if she would ever consider doing another "Pirates of the Caribbean film," Keira said: "I think it was wonderful and an amazing opportunity and those films were just extraordinary and I was extremely lucky to be a part of them. The rapper is set to release LP Before I Self-Destruct later this year and is planning a film of the same name to coincide with the record. 50 - real name Curtis Jackson - said: "It's not Prince's 'Purple Rain,' but it is inspired by the actual music." "When movies portray certain lifestyles they don't show cause and effect, but I showed characters under pressure in scenarios where they felt like there were no other options, even though there were." Women all over can rejoice, as "Sex and the City: The Movie" hits stores this week on DVD on Tuesday. The film stars the four fabulous women of the city: Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis. Fans can also buy the extended version that includes additional scenes, commentary by director Michael Patrick King and a conversation with Sarah Jessica Parker and King. George Clooney pulls double duty in "Leatherheads," acting as director and star of the sports-themed romantic comedy also starring John Krasinski and Renee Zellweger. Herman Melville's epic high seas novel will be making a return to the big screen. "Wanted" director Timur Bekmambetov has recently been hired by Universal Pictures to adapt the graphic novel-style screenplay into a hit movie, written by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage. Cooper told Daily Variety that the movie will have a modern feel, a vast difference from the original 1930 movie which starred John Barrymore as Captain Ahab and the 1956 classic which starred Gregory Peck. Spike Lee's controversy around the making of the film "Miracle At St. Anna" continues to stir, as actors that were on the set are now stepping forward to discuss the harsh working conditions for the film. Actors for the film are claiming that director Spike Lee forced the cast of his war movie to suffer so much on the set that one actor actually ended up in the hospital. The movie was filmed during a cold and wet Italian winter just after actors were subjected to a grueling and demeaning boot camp. The wet, wintery scenes were intended to recreate the World War II conditions that soldiers faced at the time. Bad filming conditions, poor eating and a combination of Lee's harsh demands landed "The Wire" actor Michael K. Williams in the hospital. The actor told World Entertainment News Network, "My character has a nervous breakdown in a field, and to sustain that constant state of agitation for that many hours it kind of got to me." Sep 23 08
It's "tis the season" for singer Mariah Carey, who has recorded a Christmas album, and is now starring in a Christmas movie. Celebrity News Service has learned all the holiday glitter is fine with Carey, who said that after recording a Christmas album she always wanted to make a holiday movie. The New York Daily News is reporting that Carey is due to star in a musical film about a town whose future is in question, when real estate developers want to demolish it. |
