Sony Taps "Zombieland" Writers For Spider-Man Venom Spin-Off
Thu, 09 Apr 2009
Spider-Man's nemesis Venom is having his own film. Sony is planning to develop a spin-off about the supervillain and has already hired writers for the job. Sci-Fi Wire reports that "Zombieland" scribes Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese are already working on the script, though they refused to give details about the storyline. Wernick said, "We're under strict orders on Venom. We can't talk about it. It's just super secret." The duo reveal that they are big fans of the character, unlike "Spider-Man" helmer Sam Raimi who wasn't thrilled with Venom before he directed the third installment in the franchise. Reese told reporters, "We read [Venom] growing up, but we were not experts. We certainly know the mythology of Venom, but went back and learned more when it became clear that we could actually get this job." Venom appeared in the 2007 "Spider-Man" installment and was played by former "That '70s Show" star Topher Grace. It is still not clear who would play the main character in the spin-off.
