Urbanworld Film Fest Adds "Mama, I Want To Sing!" To Closing Night Selection

The 13th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival has announced the world premiere of the musical "Mama, I Want To Sing!" in its closing night. The film, starring R&B songstress Ciara and Emmy Award winner Lynn Whitfield will debut on September 26, Saturday. The film, written and directed by Charles Randolph-Wright, is based on the life of singer Doris Troy, who was known to fans as "Mama Soul." It is slated to screen in theaters in October, but Urbanworld Film Festival-goers will have a chance to see it first at the event's closing at the AMC Loews 34th Street. Urbanworld is also set to honor director F. Gary Gary with the Career Achievement Award in celebration of his outstanding works, including "Friday," "Set It Off," "The Negotiator," and "The Italian Job." His latest film, "Law Abiding Citizen," starring Jamie Foxx, Gerard Butler, and Viola Davis, has been previously announced as the festival's opening night selection. Also expected in the festival is the announcement of the work of five Urbanworld Screenplay Competition finalists in live readings. HBO is sponsoring the Screenplay award category. Finalists include "145th Street" from Charles Burnett, "American Dream" by Olugbemiga Idowu, "Far Away From Here" by Dapo Adeshiyan, "Rome" by Carmen Scott, and "Winter" by James Peoples. The 13th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival, presented by BET Networks, will be held from September 23 to 27.
