Will Smith's Son Jaden To Star In New "Karate Kid" Movie
Tue, 11 Nov 2008

Don't be surprised if you see Will Smith's son Jaden practicing a little "wax on, wax off" during his martial arts lessons. The younger Smith is set to star in a new version of "The Karate Kid," a movie which brought fame to Ralph Macchio and made the saying "wax on, wax off" commonplace.

The new film will be produced by Jerry Weintraub, who launched the original franchise, and Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, Will Smith and Ken Stovitz. Will is, of course, the father of 10-year-old Jaden and the two starred together in "The Pursuit of Happyness."

The script for the new movie is being written by Chris Murphy, and word is it will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. The new film will follow the original plotline, where a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.

Jaden already takes martial arts classes, so the role should be a perfect fit. The young Smith is staying busy -- his next film is "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

The three "Karate Kid" films shot Macchio into teen superstar status in the '80s. He starred alongside Pat Morita in the films. A subsequent film, which also stared Morita, launched the career of Hilary Swank.
